An old grip turns slippery and makes you squeeze harder. With 12 in the bag, you can swap to a fresh one whenever it starts to slip, for about £1.25 a grip.

A tacky surface helps the racket stay put in your hand, so you can keep a relaxed grip through long rallies.
Wrap it before the match.
Overgrips wrap over your existing handle grip. Start at the bottom, overlap slightly as you go, and finish with the tape included for each grip.
